Playground 1 HD Review

Playground 1 HD Review

A toddler app with multiple sub-games is usually not a good idea. This is because it requires a main menu with back buttons in all of the sub-games. These relatively sophisticated usability solutions makes it hard for kids under the age of 3 – 3.5 to operate such an iPhone/iPad app, which is not something you want when it comes to entertaining your children.

I thought long and hard before reviewing Playground 1 HD because of the reason above and because some of its 12 sub games are not suitable for toddler capabilities. However,  I’ve decided to do it after all because I see the kids open it time after time, which is basically the bottom line over here, right?

The app is consisted of 12 simple mini games such as puzzle, match pairs, point the difference, erase to reveal, animal piano and several more. 6 mini games are presented in the 1st page of the main menu. To see the next 6 games, you need to slide your finger across the menu or select the button on the top left corner. Both options are difficult for kids under the age 2.5. Getting back to the menu once inside the mini-game is not an easy feat as well, because the child needs to click on the page fold on the top right side of the screen. If you are planning to use this app with children under 2.5 years old, you should be prepared to help your child.

What happened when the kids used it? Some of the sub-games are a huge hit with toddlers. The animal piano, where the kids get to pound a piano of cats, is a genius idea. Deleting the fog to reveal the picture below is also a great success with my sticky fingered pals. There are other games which are okay, such as matching pairs, but some are just impossible to do for kids under the age of 3.5 – 4, such as the games of finding the difference and slide and remember.

In conclusion, Playground 1 HD may not be one of the best iPad app for toddlers, but my kids love some of the games and return to play it time after time. I expect it to stay popular even after they go into their preschool phase because some of the games may be interesting, even for 5 year olds. I give this app 4 starts out of 5. Had the app been priced lower, I could give it an even higher score. BTA Score: 4/5
